Chord Factors

A chord factor is the symbolic representation of a chord note. For example, if a chord contains a chord factor of "A", the position of an "A" on, say, a piano keyboard, may be in any one of  8 places.

The absolute lowest note on a keyboard is generally a low A (denoted as A-1), and the highest note is generally a high C (denoted as C7). Middle C is C3.

Therefore, if the chord factors of a chord are C - E - G - A, there are a number of ways in which they can be arranged on a standard 7 and ½ octave keyboard.

To derive a formula, let us consider a simplified 3-octave keyboard, running from C1 to B3.

Consider the 4-note structure C - E - G - A.

All the notes involved are:

C1 - E1 - G1 - A1 - C2 - E2 - G2 - A2 - C3 - E3 - G3 - A3

Regrouping:

C1 - C2 - C3 - E1 - E2 - E3 - G1 - G2 - G3 - A1 - A2 - A3

We can list all possible combinations (total 81). Of these, 33 fall within the 6 "drop" categories.
