Inversions and Note Distributions

When the root (or ‘fundamental’) note of a chord is not the lowest element, then we have an inversion. Whether the position of the elements is close or open, the inversion type is still determined by which note is the lowest.

 

Below is a diagram showing all the inversion possibilities for a C Major Triad and Quadriad. The open position voicings are just one of many possible note distributions above the fixed bass note.
